Respondus is a software company that offers assessment applications for education. Mohawk College utilizes two of their products, LockDown Browser and Monitor, to facilitate online proctoring.

What is Respondus Lockdown Browser?

Respondus LockDown Browser® is a specialized web browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system such as Mohawk College’s MyCanvas.

Review tips on how to maintain your privacy during a proctored online exam

LockDown Browser is similar to other web browsers you may already use, such as Google Chrome, Safari, FireFox, or Microsoft Edge, but limits your computer to accessing only the MyCanvas site when in use.

What is Respondus Monitor?

Respondus Monitor® builds upon the power of LockDown Browser, using your webcam and video analytics to prevent cheating during online proctored exams.

When Respondus Monitor is used, students will be recorded via Respondus for the duration of the assessment. During the recording, Respondus will:

  • Conduct an environmental scan;
  • Require student photo identification to be provided (learn more about photo identification);
  • Use facial detection software;
  • Restrict web browsing using screen-locking technology;
  • Restrict access to other computer applications; and
  • Facilitate automated video review and flagging processes.
